I have seen coaches spend a tremendous amount of time and money on expert services such as marketing and branding. Some paid over $100k and never made a dime. Some invested in expensive certification programs or attended elite Mastermind groups that promised life changing connections and business growth.
Alternatively, I have seen coaches strive to learn components of business such as web design, funnel marketing, and social media, in an effort to emulate the coaches they admire, and find themselves with less clients and income than before they began.
If all of these services and strategies are so great, then why do the most successful coaches I know have medium to poor results when they try them?
I firmly believe it’s NOT the fault of the coach; the flaws and faults lie in the systems that are being taught and sold. And I’d prefer you not fall into similar traps.
My approach is holistic, and there’s three things I value above all when it comes to the business of coaching:
Your business needs to be sustainable.
Don’t let anyone talk you into spamming email boxes and pitching to everyone you ever met since you were born. You should never destroy your reputation or relationships as the price of building your business. Learn to invite people in ways that are respectful and kind, because you imagine they would LOVE the experience you offer, period. Anything excessive is bad for you, bad for your business, and bad for other people. Do what works, not what doesn't. Only do things that “feel” good and have a positive effect, otherwise you’ll dislike it and stop doing it.
Your business needs to be based on excellence.
Instead of learning to build a trillion-person Facebook group by putting out forty pieces of free content per day, coach until it’s second nature. Hire a coach so you can get into the shoes of your clients and see what it’s like. Take personal growth and success courses, travel, and read lots of books. Never stop learning new skills, building deeper relationships, and trying new things. Don't worry about what anyone else is doing, care about what YOU'RE doing and always attempt to deliver the best service you possibly can.
Your business needs to be effortless.
Coaching should create your required income in 10 hours/week or less, unless you WANT to spend more time working. I say this because coaches are givers. We need to learn how to value our very rare skills and gifts in a world that needs what we do urgently. Don’t forget: skilled professionals take five minutes to wax eyebrows and charge $45, or they sell a car for $45k, or they charge $70k for college tuition. People happily pay for what they value. You are transforming lives, and that is worthy of a generous income. Similarly, you will continue to grow into your identity, and your work day will include more than coaching. It could include parenting, spirituality, authorship, speaking, or building new businesses. Don’t limit yourself by being too busy.
